Sirdar has created something from every fashion movement and theirs is an amazingly diverse design archive. Over the years’ fashion has played an important part in Sirdar’s development and they have built up a design archive which includes everything possible from the necessity of the 1940’s wartime knitter (who wanted to knit something quite glamorous as well as helping the war effort), through the fair isles and space dyes of the 1970’s, the batwings and mohairs of the 1980’s, up to the present-day trends. Wise Badger hold a large choice of various Hayfield and Sirdar yarns, perfect for any project.
Sirdar
In 1880, the original spinning company was set up in Ossett by the Harrap brothers, Tom and Henry, originally using only wool fibres. They started with a small number of employees, and the brothers set out to create a good name for themselves and to produce high quality products. By 1890 the business had moved to the site it still occupies in Alverthorpe, Wakefield.
In 1934 Tom’s son Fred was running Sirdar. He made the decision that the future of Sirdar should be spinning hand knitting yarns sold through independent retailers. Sirdar Spinning was born.
This started a passion to create inspiring yarns in great colours and to design hand knits that were both enjoyable for people to knit with and stylish to wear. The first Sirdar branded yarns and leaflets were launched, and since then the brand has grown and gone from strength to strength. Sirdar designers produce over 350 patterns a year, and everything is done by hand in their own design studio with each pattern instruction being triple checked to ensure that it is easy to follow and that everyone can create Sirdar designs with ease.
Hayfield became part of the Sirdar family in the 1970’s and to this day is renowned for its superior quality range of essential yarns and designs. Hayfield is perfect for those who want value but don’t want to compromise on quality. Re-launched in 2011, the Hayfield style and colour palette is modern and wearable and very enjoyable to knit.
Sirdar take pride in both their heritage and in-house quality. They continue to innovate in all areas of hand knit with a commitment to making irresistible, quality yarns and giving the best in hand knit design.
